Using musicGPS

How do I record what I'm listening to on my iPhone / iPod touch?

Simply start up musicGPS whenever you're listening to a track. musicGPS only needs to be open once during a track in order to record its details automatically - if you leave musicGPS running, however, you'll get more GPS data as you move around. Please note: the iPod touch does not have the iPhone's GPS capabilities.

How do I use the musicplayer from within musicGPS?

You can play tracks that you've already listened to simply by double-tapping on the album art (this will add a new listening event at the end of the timeline). Double-tap anywhere else on the screen to open the music player controls with full access to your iPod library. Then you have several ways to select music, all of which will start playing immediately: Tap "Current" [v.1: "Load"] to play the track from the currently selected event (at the bottom of the screen); Tap "Library" [v.1: "Browse" or "Mix"] to select and play a new track, or to compile and play a playlist from any of the tracks in your iPod library.

How do I see the map view that shows me where I was when I listened to something?

Flick the central square down to change the view from album art to map tiles to personal notes; or flick the central square up to change the view from album art to personal notes to map tiles... When you're in album art view the background is blue; when in map view it's green, when in the notes view, it's red; and when in snapshot view, it's kind of yellow. In the map view, the red pins show where you are / were when listening - you can change the accuracy and other settings by pressing the settings button (bottom right-hand corner of the screen). Please note: the iPod touch does not have the iPhone's GPS capabilities.

What do I need to do when a new track starts playing while I'm in musicGPS?

You don't need to do anything: musicGPS automatically adds the album art, track info, and the time (now) and place (wherever you are). It sometimes takes a few seconds to register, but then you can shake your iPhone to navigate to the latest event on the timeline - which will be the new track you're listening to.

How do I write a text note?

You can add a text note or edit one you've already written for any event on your timeline - it's a bit like a diary or journal entry. Simply change the view to text note view (red background) and double-tap on the central square. At the moment these are "notes to self", but write for posterity - soon you'll be able to share your thoughts with your friends (and the world, if you want).

Which iPhone OS do I need?

musicGPS has been tested on OS 3.0 up to 4.3.

Getting started

It's very easy: start by listening to some music on your iPhone. You can either do this using the iPod app - in which case start up musicGPS once the music is playing - or, even better, just start up musicGPS and double-tap on the screen (outside the central square) to bring up the customized music player controls. Here you can open your "Library" to select single tracks [version 1.0: "Browse"] or make up playlists [version 1.0: "Mix"]. The cover art of the track you're listening to will appear in the central square along with the date and time. Then, if you want, flick the screen down to see a map tile of where you are. When you listen to another track, you'll see that the first track you listened to is to the left, and you can begin to move along the timeline. Keep on listening...!

Synchronization cancellation

When doing a major synchronization - e.g. the very first time, or having deleted and reinstalled the musicGPS app - you may find that the synchronization process gets cancelled every so often, particularly while the (large) images are being uploaded/downloaded. This is a deliberate failsafe measure: if it happens to you, simply restart the synchronization as many times as necessary until you get the message Synchronization finished!

How do I see what I've listened to online?

If you haven't already, make sure you've signed up for a free musicDNA account. Then enable this feature on your iPhone by going to the Sync screen in musicGPS, entering your Username and Password, and switching on "Sync Continuously". This will tell musicGPS to send any new items in your listening history to the musicDNA backend, whenever your iPhone has connectivity. However, you'll also want to "Sync Now" from time to time to make sure your listening history is fully synchronized - we recommend doing this while you have a stable wifi connection.

What happens to photos I take in musicGPS?

When you take photos in musicGPS they are saved to your camera roll images library on your iPhone - you can select them at a later time for the same or other events on your listening timeline.

Migration from version 1.x to version 2.x - what to do

1. Get a login to the musicDNA website. To use the new features and to perform the migration, you’ll need to log in using a musicDNA username and password – you can sign up for free at www.musicdna.info. This will ensure that you and you alone can access any personal data that is uploaded. If you signed up when you first got musicGPS then you don’t need to do so again, but we do suggest you simply log in to check that you remember your username and password. 2. Backup your iPhone. Before you start the migration, backup your iPhone by connecting to iTunes. If anything goes wrong during the migration, this should make it possible to restore your musicGPS listening history. 3. Connect via WiFi. Your iPhone needs to be connected to the Internet reliably to perform the migration, as your data has to be uploaded in one go. If your connection is broken while the upload is in progress you’ll have to start again, so we only support migrations over WiFi.

Migration from version 1.x to version 2.x - how it works

After you’ve upgraded, musicGPS will detect that you have an old-style event store and it will tell you that your data needs to be migrated. Enter your musicDNA username and password and your data will start being uploaded. How long it takes depends on how many listening events you have – you can follow the progress on your screen. Once the upload finishes musicGPS will delete the old event store on your iPhone and create a empty one in the new format. You can now start using musicGPS again, but until the next step is completed, you’ll be able to view only new listening events. After about ten minutes, your existing listening history will be available for download (although you don’t have to do this straightaway). To start the process, press the sync button on the main musicGPS screen, and then tap the Sync Now button in the synchonization screen. We recommend that the first time you do this you have a reliable WiFi connection, as depending on how many listening events you have, it may take some time to complete. Future synchronizations will only copy items that have been changed, either on your iPhone or via the website, so they will be much quicker.

musicGPS features

New features in musicGPS

It is already possible to view your recent listening activity online, using your musicDNA account and synced musicGPS app, on the 'my musicGPS' page. We're working on ways of customizing these views, and of enabling different kinds of social activity: it's currently possible to share a particular listening event via a Facebook status update (see Facebook status updates for details).

Facebook status updates

Assuming that you have the musicGPS app and a musicDNA account and have already synchronized them... all you need to do is: log in to the musicDNA site and turn on the Facebook Status Update setting on the "my musicGPS" page; while you're listening to a track, enter the code @facebook: (or @f: for short) on the textnote screen, followed by the text of what you want to appear in your status update.

musicGPS is now available free from the iPhone App Store.
