- Start up musicGPS; double-tap the screen anywhere except the central square to bring up the music player controls. If you're already listening to music, you'll see the track details in the controls and below on the timeline. Tap "Library" to choose one or more tracks. You can always close the music player controls with a tap in the background.
- The track you're listening to will appear after a few seconds in the central square with the date and time above. When you listen to another track, it will appear to the right of the first track and you can start moving along your timeline (see below for more details).
- To see a map tile of where you are*, flick the screen down.
- Keep listening to more music, and you'll soon build up your personal timeline!
Open up musicGPS whenever you're playing music on your iPhone*
- What you see is a timeline - the past is to the left and the future is to the right. Each picture on the timeline represents a track that you've listened to (listening events): the track information is below and the date and time of listening are above.
- [When you first start up musicGPS the timeline will either be empty or there will be a single cover art image in the middle - which is what you're listening to when the app starts.]
- In the default sequential mode, every track will be displayed on the timeline in the order that you listened to them, from left to right. Once you zoom out the display changes to chronological mode: a background grid is displayed and the tracks are shown according to the timescale.
- As you zoom out, more and more tracks will be stacked together - the number on the orange circle tells you how many tracks are in each stack. To return to sequential mode, zoom in until the background display in the top half of the screen disappears.
How to navigate your musicGPS timeline
- Stretch / pinch to zoom in or out
- Drag (and hold) the timeline to move event by event
- Flick timeline left or right to navigate - the faster
you flick, the further you go...
- Flick the timeline down (or up) to change the view from cover art to map tiles to text notes to snapshots to cover art
- In the map view, the red pins show where you are or were when you were listening - when your location is unknown, musicGPS currently displays either your most recent location or a generic map tile
- Shake to return to the currently-playing or the most recent event (you may have to wait a few seconds until the new track is fully registered)
Once you're in musicGPS you can play any track on your iPhone
- Double-tap cover art to play any track you've already listened to
- Double-tap anywhere else on the screen (outside the central square) to open the music player controls with full access to your iPod library
- Tap "Current" to play the track from the event you've navigated to (visible at the bottom of the screen), or
- Tap "Library" to select and play a single track, or to compile and play a playlist from any of the tracks in your iPod library
- Tap the Shuffle and Repeat buttons to toggle on or off
- Tap outside the music player controls to close them
We're adding new functionality to musicGPS - right now you can...
- Double-tap snapshot to take a new photo, or choose one from your iPhone photo albums*
- Double-tap text note to add/edit
- Touch the Search button
to find events by track or text info, e.g. Artist/Composer, or within a range of dates
- Touch the Configuration button
to change the GPS sensitivity (affects battery life) etc., including these "Hints"
*Please note that although musicGPS works on the iPod touch, the iPod touch does not have the iPhone's GPS capabilities, and therefore the map view will be very limited; similarly the snapshot functionality requires a camera.
